Thailand
The Kingdom of Thailand is an independent country which lies in the heart of Southeast Asia. The country is bordered to the north by Laos and Burma, to the east by Laos and Cambodia, to the south by the Gulf of Thailand and Malaysia, and to the west by the Andaman Sea and Burma. By the maritime boundary, the country is bordered to the southeast by Vietnam in the Gulf of Thailand, to the southwest by Indonesia and India in the Andaman Sea.

Land

Thailand is considered to be the world's 50th largest country in terms of total area, with a surface area of approximately 513,000 km² (198,000 sq mi), and the world's 20th largest country in terms of population with approximately 63 million people. The population consists 80% of Thais, 10% of Chinese, and 3% of Malay. The rest are minorities such as Mons, Khmers, and various hill tribes.

Religion

95% of Thais are BuddhistsMuslims are the second largest religious group. In Thailand the mostly ethnic groups are Malays. Christians, mainly Catholics. There is also a small Jewish community in Thailand, dating back to the 17th century.

Currency

The currency of Thailand is the baht which consists of 100 stang.

Economy

Thailand is an emerging economy. After enjoying the world's highest growth rate from 1985 to 1996 - averaging 9.4% annually - increased pressure on Thailand's currency, Thailand's economy started to recover in 1999, expanding 4.2% and 4.4% in 2000 Due both to the weakening of the US dollar and an increasingly strong Thai currency, by March 2008, the dollar was hovering around the 33 baht mark

Government

Three major independent authorities in balance of power according to the constitutions are executive, legislative, and judicial.

The King has little direct power under the constitution but is a symbol of national identity and unity. The head of government is the Prime Minister. Cabinet members do not have to be Members of Parliament. The legislature could hold a vote of no-confidence against the Premier and members of his Cabinet if it had sufficient votes.

Language

The country's official spoken and written language is Thai,. It is the principal language of education and government and spoken throughout the country.

Time Difference

The time difference between Bangkok, Thailand & India is only 1.5 hours ahead.

Climate
Thailand's climate is tropical, high both in temperature and humidity, and dominated by monsoons. April and May are the hottest months of the year, June sees the beginning of the South West Monsoon, and brings with it the rainy season, which continues intermittently until the end of October. From November to the end of February the climate is cool. This is also the main tourist season, and the best time to visit Thailand.
